PTA's mission is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.
Because our newsletters are only being published about every 6-7 weeks, we are trying something new this year with these "news briefs" to try and maintain communication between the bigger publication. Here are the announcements for this week!

Dear NCPTA Member:
The North Carolina General Assembly’s Program Evaluation Division (PED) has been directed to examine how limitations on school calendar flexibility have affected school districts, school operations, and students during the past 10 years. Current state law (G.S. § 115C-84.2(d)) requires that the opening day of school for students may not be earlier than the Monday closest to August 26th and closing day of school for students may not be later than the Friday closest to June 11th.
PED has partnered with the North Carolina Parent Teacher Association (NCPTA) to send you this voluntary 10-minute survey that asks opinion questions about how the school calendar for school districts affects families.
Click on the link to complete the survey:
NC PTA School Calendar Survey
Please complete this survey no later than 5:00pm on Sunday, September 25, 2016.
Your individual responses to this survey will be anonymous and cannot be linked to your email address. The NCPTA has sent you this email on our behalf; PED does not have access to your email address.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Carol Shaw at firstname.lastname@example.org or 919-301-1216.
Thank you for your participation! We look forward to receiving your completed survey.
The Poe Center’s Drugs Uncovered: What parents need to know! is coming to West Millbrook Middle School on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 from 7:00-9:00 pm!
The Poe Center for Health Education and West Millbrook Middle School are challenging you – we want to see if you can identify any of the 70 references to drugs and alcohol hidden in a “life like” teenager’s bedroom. The bedroom is part of the Poe Center’s interactive program, Drugs Uncovered: What parents need to know!
Drugs Uncovered will inform you of: current drug trends, teen culture, signs of substance use and abuse and much, much more. It will also give you the tools you need to effectively talk with your teens about drugs and alcohol.
This program is FREE for parents and adults. So please join us at West Millbrook Middle School on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 from 7:00-9:00 pm.
To pre-register for this program please contact Jodi Bulmer at (919) 337-2275 OR email@example.com.. There is also a registration link here:
Hope your kids are having a great start to this new school year. We have so many programs in the works and would love to have you all involved to help support these great programs for our students!
There is an updated sign up genius for all PTA events that are on the schedule. Please take a look and see where you can help out. WMMS Volunteer Sign Up Sheet
Our first newsletter of the year is available here! Packed with helpful information, our goal is to publish these every 6 weeks or so. If you have information to share please contact Jodi Bulmer or Amy Faust.
We also have an immediate need for a chair to coordinate our Reflections program.
Reflections encourages students to express themselves through the arts by submitting their own original work in dance, film, photography, literature, music comp, and visual arts.
This is a program that is coordinated through Wake County PTA, so the guidelines are all set, it is really about having a local school representative to coordinate the communications and make sure that the submissions are submitted to Wake County by the deadlines. It is a great opportunity to have a program that supports the arts. We have not participated in the past and we would like to encourage this program for WMMS and give our children this opportunity. But we won't be able to unless we have some parent volunteers that will be willing to help us put on this program. If you have any questions, please let me know.
I hope to see all of you at open house on Thursday evening!
What a great first week back at WMMS!
Please help us out in carpool by.... staying as close as possible to that curb for those making the right turn into WMMS. The further out in that lane you are, the harder it is for those trying to exit to see past you. It slows down everyone!
Open House is next Thursday, September 15th at 6pm. This is a great opportunity to walk your student schedules, meet teachers, join PTA, complete the online volunteer screening that must be done every year and find out more about our Fall Fundraiser for PTA. Don't miss it!
Have you re-linked your Kroger/Lowes/Food lion/Harris Teeter cards? Please do it for our students!
Thinking about the NC State Fair yet??!! Please order your fair tickets through this year’s WCPSS partnership program and earn $2 per adult / $1 per child for West Millbrook Middle School. This is a great, no fuss way to help support our school and ANYONE can use this link to buy their tickets!!
Follow the link below to purchase your tickets and when prompted enter WMMS school code (608).
"...PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the 2016-2017 theme: What Is Your Story?"
(From National PTA)
WMMS is looking for someone(s) to chair/co-chair and run Reflections for us this year. We haven't had this program in some time, but we think our kids are so creative, and have so much to offer in this program - we'd love to get it back up and running!
There is FANTASTIC support for this program via WAKE PTA = Leah Williams is incredible and provides in depth training and step by step instruction on how to make the program successful. Wake PTA is holding a leadership conference that includes TWO Reflections training sessions (free to attend) on September 1.
If you have experience with Reflections from previous schools and would consider helping out we'd love to hear from you! Please email the PTA at firstname.lastname@example.org
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! Summer has certainly passed by quickly. I hope that your time away from school has been fun and relaxing.
Your WMMS PTA board members have been working over the summer on the plans for our new school year. We are excited to share these plans with you at Catapult and Open House. Our volunteers are truly some of the best around and they are each dedicated to making our school outstanding. If you are new to WMMS or have not volunteered in the past, please know that we would love to have you partner with us this year.
The PTA's role at the school is a very important one. We will continue to support the staff with financial resources and volunteer support. We will plan activities that enrich our school community; we will support educational enrichment as well as offer financial aid to our teachers through curriculum assistance, team funds, and teacher grants. We will support our clubs and arts programs as well. Our fundraising efforts throughout the year provide the necessary financial resources to fulfill these needs. Your financial support is key to enriching the education for all students.
In this mailing you will find a PTA membership form coupled with a retail cards form. Providing us with your retail card information will allow us to enroll your store card into the store’s cash back programs which is free money for our PTA. Please take the time to complete this form and bring it with you to Catapult, schedule walk-thru, Open House, the school office or return them to your child's homeroom teacher.
If you would like to get involved with the PTA and join our team of volunteers to help support the amazing programs and our teachers and students, please follow this URL and complete the Google form
Please be sure that you are receiving all the communications from our school and PTA. First and foremost, you will want to be on the principal and team distribution email lists. We have many ways for you to stay in the loop for PTA events. I have listed them below.
Thank you for all your support this school year!

The PTA is actively looking for volunteers to help in a few key areas... Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in learning more or signing up to help support our school!
Character Ed - we have one experienced person that needs a co-chair to help with our every other month Character Ed celebrations!
Career Day - need a shadow
Audit Chair - this person works with a team to review the monthly bank statement and transactions. At the end of the school year, the team works together to complete and submit the final review
Nominations Committee members - this team works to recruit passionate people into our PTA for the next year!
8th Grade Events - this team works collaboratively to plan our 8th grade picnic and the dance! The events are in May, so this team has lots of time to come together and plan - they don't even start meeting until January usually. So - if you are busy in the fall but have time to help after Christmas we'd love to hear from you!
We look forward to hearing from you soon!!
